Camp site
As last year, at Wells-next-the-Sea, site 132111 on page 375 of the ‘Big Sites Book’. Book direct with the campsite.
Finding the site
The address is The Ranch, Stiffkey Road, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk NR23 1QB, grid ref 926430 on OS Sheet 132 (OS sheet 133 will also be useful for this weekend). Take the A149 road eastwards from Wells. Pass Polka Road on your left, then Warham Road (Blue Sky Gallery on the corner) on your right. The site entrance is a further 350m on your right, just after the ‘station’ for the Wells-Walsingham miniature railway. The most obvious sign at the entrance is a white signboard labelled ‘The Lime Works’. Fork R on the access road.
Camping details
The site is fairly basic but has a couple of toilets (supply of loo paper is not guaranteed, so bring your own!) with a wash basin in each one. The designation ‘own sanitation essential’ in ‘Big Sites’is an error. The site is used mainly by caravans and motor homes. I will be there from about 1600h on Friday. If you arrive before that mention that you are with the canoeing group and ask where to pitch (normally to the left of the access road in the first field you come to on entering the site). The centre of Wells is a 15 minute walk away, along field paths if you wish (probably safer than walking along the A149).
Canoeing
Runs depend on tides, weather, and the capability of the group. Approximate times (heights relative to Immingham Dock in brackets) of high water are: Saturday, 0924h (7.0m); Sunday, 0959h (6.8m), necessitating early starts. These are mid-range tides so we should have enough water, and possibly strong currents to paddle against at times. A trolley is useful, but not essential, for runs starting at Wells and Morston. Subject to suitable weather runs will be as below. Trips are suitable for general-purpose kayaks, but if you have a sea kayak that is preferable. If you are inexperienced, or want to paddle an open canoe please discuss with me in advance.
